Leadership Development

I want my life to count for something. I’ve spent my entire life playing to my strengths, but along the way I’ve realized I can make a bigger impact working through other people. No doubt I will always be a “maker,” but I spend a lot of my time now learning how to become a better leader. It’s not enough to make great art. I want to encourage, empower and see other artists use their gifts in a way that lines up with the heart of God. Nothing is more exciting than watching someone discover the purpose behind their passion. My goal is to replace myself as many times over as I can.

I started playing guitar over 25 years ago and picked up just about every rock instrument along the way. For six years, I toured the country, and while I had a great time and learned a lot, it wasn’t very conducive to having a family. So, I started a creative agency, and in the midst of my career change, my wife and I found the church I would eventually serve at as the Worship and Creative Arts Pastor.

For most of my youth, I had a hard time figuring out how my gifts fit into the church. Because everyone seemed to treat creativity as more extravagant than necessary, I had no idea there was a need for artists of any kind. Looking at it now, it seems so obvious, but it took a perspective shift to help me find my place. Telling the Gospel in beautiful and compelling ways is that place.

Most of my friends outside of church are not Christians, and my heart aches for them. Unfortunately, the Bible doesn’t hold much weight with them, but I’ve noticed something that I hope I never forget. People can disagree all they want with a preacher, but it’s super difficult for them to deny someone else’s story. They can’t outright dismiss someone else’s experience. When we share someone’s story, when we show generosity within the church, or even when our church sings like our lives have been changed… BOOM! That’s it. That’s the power of Testimony at work. In one form or another, I plan on spending the rest of my life trying to tell the story of Jesus as beautifully and captivatingly as I can.

Hablo Español Un Poco

One of the things on my bucket list is to be able to speak Spanish fluently. I have a plan, I have the discipline and I have a reason. It’s going to happen. As best as I can tell, I’m about 60% fluent at the moment.
